Sunday School #29: Chris Lake

On this week’s Sunday School we talk about often looked over house and electro dynamo Chris Lake.

Chris Lake is a house DJ/producer from Scotland who is highly praised in the EDM community as one of the best and most underrated house DJs in the world. Chris Lake is the founder of his highly recognized record label, Rising Music, which is already in its 7th year running with artists such as Nelski and Marco Lys. Chris Lake has released most of his resent music through his Rising Music label, but in the past he has released tracks through Nervous Records, Alternative Route, Pangea Records, Little Mountain Records, Apollo Records and mau5trap.

He first came out in the scene in the UK with his bootleg remixes of The Prodigy songs such as “Climbatize” and Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams”. Chris Lake’s first original track titled “Changes” was released in 2005 on Alternative Route Records and then was licensed to Universal Music for its world release with a vocal track sung by Laura V. “Changes” became a success, reaching #10 on Billboard’s Hot Dance Airplay chart. In 2007 his single called “Carry Me Away” reached the number one position on the Billboard Hot Dance Airplay Chart. Then he got two tracks called “Only One” and “If You Knew” in the top ten positions in the US dance chart.

Chris Lake in 2009 released his first full length album called “Crazy”. It was a chart topped amount allot of savvy EDM fans but never made much of a splash commercially. It is still hailed as a great house jem.

In 2010 Chris Lake teamed up with deadmau5 to release a minimalist, IDM infused house track called “I Said” which is a great combination of deadmau5 creativity and Chris Lake’s minimalist funk. Also he released in the same year a couple of more collaborations with Rising Music’s Nelski and Marco Lys called “Minimal Life” and “Running Out” consecutively.

Chris Lake then in 2011 and 2012 released some solo productions called NYC, Sundown, Stand Alone and Build up.

Chris Lake may not be huge success commercially but he is a huge and much respected name in the house scene, especially in Europe where he basically lives in Ibiza and is beloved there because of his infectious minimalistic yet funky brand of house and his huge electro club bangers as well. He is hailed as one of the best in the world in the craft of DJing and producing house. Maybe not very well known but legendary none the less and with more than 10 years of experience under his belt, he is a very important part of what house music is today.
